The Festival is delighted to welcome legendary folk singer-songwriter Don McLean to Perth. His remarkable song American Pie catapulted him to stardom in 1971.

In a career spanning nearly forty years, culminating with his inauguration into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 2004, Don has released over 20 albums and scored major chart successes with Everyday (1973), Mountains of Mourne (1974), Crying (1980), Castles in the Air (1981), Since I Don’t Have You (1981), Can’t Blame the Train (1987) and again with American Pie in the UK in 1991. His songs have inspired countless others, including Johnny Cash, and have been performed and covered by artists as diverse as Madonna, Fred Astaire, Weird Al Yankovic, Elvis Presley, Coolio and George Michael.

American Pie was inspired by the death of Buddy Holly and is a social critique on modern America. It was named the fifth greatest song of the 20th Century by the RIAA and the National Endowment for the Arts.
