The Discipline of the Mind: Drawings of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham
19th May to 20th October 2012
2012 is the centenary of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham’s birth and to celebrate Perth Museum & Art Gallery is hosting a touring exhibition of her work curated by leading British art historian Mel Gooding.
The Discipline of the Mind brings together over 50 works spanning Barns-Graham’s career from the 1940s to the 1990s. Her subjects include landscape, rock formations, glaciers, wave studies, studio interiors and abstract works. The exhibition focuses principally on drawings.
Barns-Graham was born in Fife and after studying art in Edinburgh she moved to St Ives in Cornwall where she joined the community of modern artists experimenting with abstract forms and modernism that included Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo. Barns-Graham maintained her connection with St Ives all her life and later split her base between Cornwall and St Andrews, where both coastal locations greatly informed her work.
The exhibition will be supplemented by a small number of works by some of the leading St Ives artists on loan from The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Aberdeen Art Gallery and MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art).
