It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 43rd Perth Festival of the Arts. Once
again we have managed to organise a festival of world-class artistes and musicians that will
bring quality performances to Perth over the period 22nd May to 1st June 2014.
The exciting part of chairing the Festival is to try and maintain events that have proven
successful over the years, whilst managing to encourage new and creative shows that will
enhance the profile of the Festival and, of course attract as wide an audience as possible.
As in previous years, we continue to ensure we bring you a wide variety of entertainment,
including; opera, comedy, art and drama, as well as pop, choral and classical concerts. In
addition, the daily local schools concerts, plus Art on the River and Perth Art Trail, give the
opportunity for our local talents to be exhibited. We welcome the return of a number of old
friends: Jools Holland and his R&B Orchestra; English Touring Opera gracing the Concert
Hall stage for the first time (whilst Perth Theatre is being refurbished) with Mozart’s ever
popular opera
The Magic Flute
;
The Sixteen performing their inspirational Choral Pilgrimage
in St John’s Kirk; and, after several years’ absence, the return of the arTay exhibition in our
marquee.
The orchestral concerts have always been an integral part of the Festival and this year they
will be led by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, under their dynamic young
conductor Vasily Petrenko. This concert is certainly going to be a highlight, incorporating the
Scottish premier of Stewart Copeland’s (former drummer of The Police) Percussion
Concerto. This year also sees the Scottish Homecoming, which we wish to celebrate with
the world premier of Perthshire Cantata, written and performed by Perthshire’s own Dougie
MacLean. This new commission for the Festival will make a wonderful climax to a very
special year.
Finally, I would like to thank the many sponsors, benefactors and friends who so generously
support us, and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible throughout Perth
Festival of the Arts 2014.
