Musician and composer,
Dougie MacLean
, has composed a new piece of music entitled
‘The Perthshire Cantata’ for Perth Festival of the Arts. The commission has been
supported by Creative Scotland’s Traditional Arts Commissioning Programme.
‘The Perthshire Cantata’ is an original, 'song-based' composition by Dougie MacLean
using Perthshire themes in the inspiration and lyric, incorporating traditional roots-based
and contemporary styles. It is a piece that, when performed with the original ‘Perthshire
Amber Suite’ (commissioned by Perth Festival from Dougie MacLean in 1999), provides a
full and varied programme. Dougie MacLean has an international reputation as
"Scotland's Musical Ambassador" (Performing Songwriter USA) and having been born and
based in Perthshire for his whole life much of the inspiration for his acclaimed
compositions and songs comes from this place. He has composed this piece from the heart.
"...a Scottish phenomenon...with his exquisite guitar style, expressive voice and honest
performance, his songs conjure up remarkably vivid imagery of our world"
The Performing Songwriter, USA
The work is arranged by John Logan, arranger and conductor as well as French horn player
in the RSNO. Musicians for the performance include: Dougie MacLean (guitar, fiddle,
bouzouki), Ross Ainslie (Highland and Lowland Pipes, whistles,
mandocello), Sorren MacLean (vocals and guitar), Jenna Reid
(fiddle), Iain Sandilands (percussion) and the 11 string players
of the Perthshire Ensemble.
