Jack Bruce and his Big Blues Band, Perth Concert Hall

Folk & Jazz critic

"It's still the blues," remarked Jack Bruce after he and his magnificent band had taken his classic Morning Story on a game-changing Latin American adventure.

Too true; there's hardly a note the legendary Cream bassist sings or plays that doesn't have the blues somewhere in its DNA, and there wasn't a song here that didn't find Bruce creating magic in the moment.

Partnered in the engine room by ultra-dynamic drummer Frank Tontoh and having his orchestrations brought blazingly to life by a horn section brimming with mischief and attention to detail, Bruce was in his element, going back to Graham Bond days with an opening First Time I Met the Blues trio joust with guitarist Tony Remy and waxing soulfully reflective in a piano-Hammond organ partnership on Childsong before unleashing a foundation-shaking bassline for a Spoonful that dug deep into the blues' gospel connections.

It's his power to excite and motivate others to do the same – another Bond favourite, Neighbour Neighbour had a sax solo that Richter might have struggled to measure – that makes Bruce such a fascinating, magnetic figure and one that Perth certainly responded to.

Jack Bruce, a Scot, was the founder member of Cream with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker. Bassist, singer, composer, musician. Jack has travelled the world and the decades playing diverse musical styles but has now come home to the blues. The blues has always been the driving force, the root of Jack’s art- whether his compositions made eternal by Cream – Sunshine of Your Love, White Room, I Feel Free or his new songs, Jack lives the blues.

The band consists of guitarist Tony Remy, drummer Frank Tontoh, keyboardist Paddy Milner, fellow bassist Nick Cohen, trombonist Winston Rollins, tenor saxophonist Derek Nash, and trumpeter Paul Newton.Jacj will be handling bass, vocal, and piano duties throughout the performance.

Jack has performed with Alexis Korner, Graham Bond, Manfred Mann, John Mayall, Eric Clapton, Frank Zappa, Tony Williams, Lou Reed, Burt Bacharach, Ringo Starr, Carlos Santana, Gary Moore and Joe Bonamassa to name quite a lot! Now he wants to play for you.
